The spectrum of light from extremely distant galaxies that move away from us shows a distinct shift towards red. Hubble discovered that this shift is proportional to the distance of the galaxy from the Earth. By measuring the extent of the red shift, it is possible to calculate the velocity and distance of the galaxy.
